    Antiquity Consulting is seeking applicants for a temporary Lead Archaeological Field Technician II position to support cultural resources projects throughout the southern Puget Sound region. This position is intended to provide coverage during an employee leave of absence. This position is temporary but could continue as a permanent full-time role at the end of 3 months depending on staffing needs.

    Applicants must possess experience conducting archaeological survey in western Washington, including shovel probing, pedestrian survey, and excavation units. Successful candidates will have demonstrated the ability to work independently in the field, lead small field crews under delegated survey plans, maintain accurate field records, and make sound professional decisions with the support of project archaeologists. Candidates should also have formal training and professional experience using ESRI GIS.

    Compensation

    Lead Archaeological Field Technician starting hourly pay rates are determined by relevant skills and experience. Archaeological Field Technician II positions start at $25-29/hr. All Antiquity employees, including as-needed and temporary employees, accrue paid personal time and sick time. Fieldwork travel time is paid from the office. Fieldwork travel mileage is reimbursed at GSA rates. Overnight accommodation is paid directly by Antiquity. Per diem at GSA rates is provided on fieldwork days requiring overnight accommodation. Antiquity staff are provided with all necessary fieldwork equipment.

    Qualifications

    Antiquity’s Archaeological Field Technicians are entry-level professionals who have completed or are in pursuit of a four-year degree; and can work independently and as part of a small team to assist their cultural resource colleagues in the field. A BA/BS in Archaeology or a related field is required for the Lead Archaeological Field Technician II position. Tribal members are encouraged to apply regardless of experience.

    Archaeological Field Technicians work in the field for up to 10 hours a day (plus additional travel time), according to fieldwork schedules set by the Principal Archaeologist. Antiquity staff must work efficiently and safely in physically uncomfortable field situations while conducting pedestrian or shovel probe survey to Antiquity standards. Antiquity field staff must be capable of occasionally lifting 50 pounds and must be able to carry necessary field equipment and personal supplies for extended periods, such as: water necessary for entire workday, food necessary for entire workday, personal protective gear, first aid supplies, and equipment needed for work tasks such as hand tools and sifting screens. You may be required to be separated from your vehicle or the field carpool vehicle for the entire fieldwork day. Work is typically in rural, suburban, and urban environments, and conditions may include inclement weather, noisy environments, steep slopes, invasive plants, insects, saturated and unstable soils/sediments, and rocky or compacted sediments. Candidates must have prior experience working in a variety of project settings. Daily fieldwork may include several miles of off-trail hiking as well as rapid excavation of 1-meter-deep shovel probes. You must have reliable transportation and be available to work in the Tumwater office.

    Candidates must have formal training and professional experience using Esri GIS software. Responsibilities include producing maps and figures for cultural resource assessment reports and conducting background historical and archival research in support of cultural resource assessments and site documentation.

    The position may also include occasional assistance with laboratory tasks, equipment organization, and field gear maintenance as needed to support project operations.

    Location & Schedule

    Antiquity’s office is located in Tumwater, WA, and our fieldwork is typically in Thurston, Mason, Grays Harbor, Pacific, Lewis, Cowlitz, Pierce, and King counties. This position is approximately 75% field-based and 25% office based. The Antiquity fieldwork schedule is typically M-F, and fieldwork days are 8 hours in the winter and 9 hours in spring/summer/fall. The position schedule is 36 hours a week and will span July through September 2026. All staff are required to meet at the office for fieldwork. Remote work is not available.
